Taste the Trail, Nelson

Nelson, New Zealand

Located at top of the South Island – Nelson is known for its arts and crafts, orchards, golden beaches, cycle trails and wineries. The region boasts a range of activities from hiking, kayaking, fly fishing and cycling.

Overlooked by the Christ Church Cathedral, this vibrant city is filled with boutique shops and art galleries, while along Nelson’s picturesque waterfront Wakefield Quay, you will find a number of restaurants offering gorgeous views across the harbour to the mountains. Just along from the city centre, Tahunanui Beach is a popular swimming beach with some of the best kitesurfing in New Zealand.    If you are in Nelson over the weekend, then be sure to check out Nelson’s Saturday market which is filled with fresh produce arts and crafts and local characters.   And we recommend a visit to the World of WearableArt and Classic Cars Museum, which holds a world class collection of classic cars alongside mind-blowing works of art that are wearable.

Nelson is also surrounded by a number of National Parks including Nelson Lakes, home to over 16 lakes and gateway to some of the world’s best fly fishing. Kahurangi National Park, the countries second largest national park is known for its hiking and more recently for its Lord of the Rings filming sites. And lastly, Abel Tasman National Park is New Zealand’s only coastal national park, with its golden sandy beaches and clear turquoise water makes it very popular for cruises, walks and kayaking trips.

Surrounding towns include the quaint coastal village of Mapua, a delightful place to while away a day, with a collection of waterfront restaurants, galleries, boutique shops and a brewery. You can also hire bikes to ride on the Great Taste Trail – take in the seaviews and visit wineries and art galleries along the way.   Motueka, located in the centre of a rich hinterland where orchards, vineyards and hop gardens flourish, you can pick your own berries in season and enjoy local apples pears and kiwifruit, and the Motueka River is famed for its Brown Trout.  Moutere Hills – the picturesque inland highway links Nelson city to its rural surrounds. Art galleries, wineries, roadside fruit stalls and gourmet food producers are scattered throughout the pristine landscape and the historic village of Upper Moutere is home to leading ceramic artists, sculptors and wood workers who have chosen to live here.
