The Great Taste Trio really lives up to its name! A New Zealand active tour, take in the spectacular scenery whilst cycling on the Great Taste Trail.  Then, from Kaiteriteri Beach leave your bike for a guided walk and kayak in the beautiful Abel Tasman National Park.   To top it all off, we’ve included a Wine Tour to finish.

Day By Day

1

Arrive Nelson, New Zealand

Kia Ora, Welcome to Nelson, home of the Abel Tasman National Park.

The Christ Church Cathedral looks over the city streets where you will find boutique shops, art galleries and alfresco dining. Along Wakefield Quay, Nelson’s picturesque waterfront, you will find several restaurants with views across the harbour to the mountains.

Surrounded by picturesque cottage gardens with handcrafted buildings overlooking a grassy village green, this is a resort with heart! Grand Mercure Nelson Monaco is built from handmade bricks and timber salvaged from the Nelson Wharf which was built in 1842.

The Great Taste Trio, Day One

Cycle from Nelson to Mapua – 22km’s (13.6 miles)
Grade: Easy

The Great Taste Trio, is also known as ‘The Pleasure Seekers Triathlon’. It’s a five journey taking in cycling, walking and sea kayaking. You’ll spend 2.5 days cycling from Nelson to Kaiteriteri and remainder walking and kayaking in the beautiful Abel Tasman National Park.

Day one starts with the collection of your bikes, a briefing before heading off on the Tasman’s Great Taste Trail. During today’s cycle take in Beach-side cycling, quirky cafes, vineyards with wine tasting and food, boutique breweries with beer & food match and art & crafts.   Around noon, leave Rabbit Island and cross the Mapua estuary and explore Mapua’s village including bars, cafes, restaurants, museum and galleries.

The Great Taste Trio, Day Two

Cycle from Mapua to Motueka – 26km’s (16 miles)
Grade: Easy/Intermediate

Continue today’s cycle on the Great Taste Trail. Cycle through Orchards, vineyards and market gardens set in rolling hills with panoramic coastal views.  You will also have the chance to take in the local arts and crafts and enjoy an optional detour to Kina Peninsula (approx. 5km’s, 3 miles ) for further art & vineyards.

The Great Taste Trio, Day Three

Cycle from Motueka to Kaiteriteri – 17.5km’s (11 miles)
Grade: Easy/Intermediate

Cruise Kaiteriteri to Totaranui – 1.5 hours Walk the Abel Tasman Coastal Track, Totaranui to Awaroa – 7 kms (4.5 miles)including tidal crossing Maximum elevation 60m (200 ft)

From Motueka, cycle the Great Taste Trail past tidal inlets, orchards, cafes and a boutique brewery in the small rural town of Riwaka.   Then, the final section takes you through Kaiteriteri’s mountain bike park, weaving through the forest and out to the golden sands of Kaiteriteri – an entry point to Abel Tasman National Park. Here you will board your Vista Cruise and take in the Abel Tasman coastline from the southern tip of the park, Kaiteriteri to Totaranui in the north. Lunch is included.

From Totaranui, you will walk through beech and rata forests and along secluded golden beaches to the breath-taking expanse of the Awaroa inlet.   At Awaroa, a kiwi welcome awaits you at Meadowbank Homestead.

Located right on the edge of the inlet, Meadowbank Homestead is a faithful re-creation of the Wilson family’s original home. The lodge offers comfortable accommodation and is full of history and kiwi charm.

The Great Taste Trio, Day Four

Walk from Awaroa to Onetahuti – 5 kms (3 miles)
Sea Kayak from Onetahuti (Tonga Beach) to Torrent Bay – 10kms (6 miles)

With the Vista Cruise offering a back-up, you can choose to do less walking or paddling.

Depart Awaroa and walk over Tonga Saddle to Onetahuti beach for your kayaks and training. Leave Onetahuti for a morning of beach hopping along the coast, taking in points of interest including Bark Bay, Falls River and Frenchman’s Bay. If conditions allow, visit the seal colony at Tonga Island and watch out for pups in December and January. Cruise past Tonga Quarry and the Tonga Arches, where your guide will explain the history of this granite area, its features and quarry relics.

Enjoy lunch at one of the idyllic bays along the coast and take time out to relax, explore, swim or sunbathe on the golden sand.

 Located on the beachfront, The Torrent Bay Lodge was originally the holiday home of the Wilson family. It has now been extended and renovated to include all the modern comforts whilst keeping its relaxed, beach holiday feel.

The Great Taste Trio, Day Five - Nelson

Sea Kayak from Torrent Bay to Marahau/Kaiteriteri – 12kms (7.5miles)
Scenic Drive from Marahau/Kaiteriteri to Nelson

Enjoy coffee on the deck or take a stroll along the golden sands of Torrent Bay before Breakfast this morning.

Your final day includes paddling along the coast, discovering pristine bays, beaches. Stop for lunch (included) at any one of the bays, before continuing onto Marahau or Kaiteriteri (tide and weather dependent).   Return to Nelson by coach transfer.

Explore Nelson on your Wine Exposed Tour, where the vineyards are set amongst scenic countryside often with a foreground of rich horticultural land, tidal estuaries and background of the Mount Richmond Forest Park or Kahurangi National Park.  Your guide has chosen each vineyard for its stunning location, unique story and above all each vineyard is family owned and driven by passion to consistently provide high quality wines. Each visit is different and may include wine appreciation, meeting the winemaker, walking through the vines and sampling wines from the tank or barrel. Food & wine matching is always a highlight along with tasting other local gourmet foods.

Depart Nelson

Farewell Nelson today with a shuttle transfer to Nelson Airport and connect with your onwards flight (flight not included).

Pricing

Pricing is subject to availability and confirmation of the stated itinerary at time of booking.  If we are unable to confirm the stated hotels and services, we will endeavour to confirm substitutes at similar rates, however additional costs may apply.

Rental Car Terms & Conditions:

Inclusions: unlimited kilometres, airport/ferry collection fee, full insurance (subject to reduced excess), front windscreen cover, personal accident insurance, guaranteed replacement vehicle in case of accident.

Exclusions: insurance excess reduction of $345.00 including GST (note, standard insurance excess is $3,450.00 including GST), bond, petrol costs, one way fee ($57.50), optional extras, (all additional expenses to be paid direct)

Payment Policy

We do require a non-refundable deposit of NZD$250.00 per person before we go ahead with securing any reservations.

In addition, some of our suppliers may require further deposits to cover their strict cancellation policies, in this case we would advise you at the time of quoting and confirming your itinerary.

The balance of your booking would be required 45 days prior to your travel date.   If you book inside 45 days, full payment would be required at time of booking.

Payment can be made by electronic wire transfer and should include the additional NZD $25.00 bank fee.   We also accept Visa and Mastercard at an additional fee of 3.1%.

Amendments

We are happy to amend your itinerary and dates, however please keep in mind that some of the original services may not be available for your new dates, which may incur additional costs for substituted services.   Amendment fees may apply with multiple changes.

Cancellation Fees

Once Confirmed               Non-refundable Deposit of NZD $250.00 per person

Inside 45 – 21 Days          A Cancellation fee of 30% of your total booking value will apply, along with any cancellation fees applied by our accommodation, sightseeing and other providers.

Inside 20 – 8 days             A Cancellation fee of 50% of your total booking value will apply, along with any cancellation fees applied by our accommodation, sightseeing and other providers.

Inside 7 Days                      Full Cancellations, 100% charge

We will however do our very best to recover and minimise these cancellation fees but recommend that you purchase Travel Insurance to cover yourself.
