Cycling around the South

Experience the South Island by bike, this New Zealand cycling tour includes a range of day trips cycling amongst the vineyards, forests, golden beaches, through high country farm stations and on a historic rail trail. We have also included a couple of our favourite day trips to Abel Tasman National Park & the spectacular Milford Sound.

Arrive into Blenheim

Kia Ora and welcome to Blenheim, Marlborough‘s main town.

On your arrival, collect your Intermediate Sedan rental vehicle (Holden Cruze or similar) with all-inclusive insurance.

Enjoy the afternoon relaxing amongst the vines or cross the road to the Vines Village Café for wine tasting.

Start your cycling itinerary off with a Guided Wine Tour and experience local wine and Marlborough’s stunning scenery.

This fully guided bike tour includes 5-6 of Marlborough’s premium wineries including lunch and a wine tasting at the delicious Wairau River winery restaurant. Ride along country roads, river stop-banks and through vineyards. During your full day trip, learn about the history and geography of NZ’s largest wine region by your guide.

Blenheim to Nelson

Today’s Drive Time & Distance: 1 hour 30 minutes, 114 km’s (70 miles)

On route to Nelson today, enjoy the original seafood cruise in the Marlborough Sounds. The Mussel Cruise takes in the highlights of the Pelorus and Kenepuru Sounds. Enjoy the stunning scenery, and a visit into a Greenshell Mussel Farm for a tasting of fresh steamed mussels served with award winning Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.

Nelson’s a vibrant city where you will find boutique shops, art galleries and alfresco dining. Along Wakefield Quay, Nelson’s picturesque waterfront, you will find several restaurants with views across the harbour to the mountains.

Surrounded by picturesque cottage gardens with handcrafted buildings overlooking a grassy village green, this is a resort with heart! Nelson

Distance: 10 – 40+Km (6.2 – 25 miles)
Fitness level: A basic level of fitness is required
Trail Grade: 1 & 2 (the routes are mostly flat) 

Today’s ride uses sections of The Great Taste Trail, and is a real highlight of your New Zealand cycling tour. You will explore Tasman’s Ruby Coast, with trails that take you to striking vistas of Tasman Bay.

Transfer to a lovely start point at the top of a hill and spend the morning cycling along the trail, making your way back to Mapua Wharf for lunch (included)   After lunch, explore the village by bike or catch the 10 minute ferry to Rabbit Island, where you can cycle along forest trails and beside golden beaches.

Abel Tasman National Park Day Trip

Today’s Drive Time & Distance: 1 hour, 61 km’s  (38 miles) each way

Drive to Stephens Bay, located in the Abel Tasman National Park to enjoy your scenic cruise, kayaking, swimming and bush walk adventure all in one day, along with visiting the Tonga Island Marine Reserve. The comfortable launch carries kayaks, snorkelling gear and towels and includes gourmet lunch, snacks and refreshments. Local beer and wine are complimentary with lunch.

Nelson to Queenstown

Return your rental vehicle and fly to Queenstown and continue with your cycling adventure!  Note, flight is not included.

On arrival you will be transferred to your hotel.

Milford Sound Day Trip

Board your luxury coach and travel along the shores of Lake Wakatipu and across the tussock-grassed plains to Te Anau. After a morning tea break (own cost) the coach continues along the spectacular Milford Road with photo stops along the way. At Milford Sound, board the Milford Mariner and cruise the full length of Milford Sound to the Tasman Sea. Enjoy excellent viewing and plenty of time to enjoy the waterfalls, rain forest, mountains and wildlife.

Return to Queenstown by a spectacular scenic flight over the Southern Alps, a fitting finale to the trip.

Queenstown

Distance: approx. 14km (8.7 miles)
Fitness level: easy, suitable for novice cyclists and families
Trail Grade: 1 -2

Experience the High Country Station Ride, from Queenstown enjoy a cruise to Mt Nicholas High Country Farm. You will stop at Bob’s Cove to view flora and fauna up close and enjoy spectacular views towards Glenorchy, Mt Earnslaw, the Southern Alps and The Remarkables mountain range.

Journey between Mt Nicholas and Walter Peak (high country farms) located on the western shores of Lake Wakatipu as you cycle along a quiet country road through open farm land. Breathe in the fresh mountain air, watch the landscape unfold and take in the panoramic alpine views while cycling along a remote but public, shingle road to Colonel’s Homestead at Walter Peak. Enjoy a BBQ lunch at Walter Peak before boarding the vintage steamship TSS Earnslaw for the return cruise to Queenstown.

Queenstown

Distance: 55km (34 miles) or 63 km’s (39 miles) with optional River Track or shorter if required, with pick up in Chatto Creek*
Fitness level: easy
Trail Grade: 1 -2

Cycle on one of the most spectacular gorges on the famous Otago Central Rail Trail today.    The ride takes you through the Poolburn Gorge with two tunnels and two viaducts all set in a secluded rocky gorge.  Cycle the remainder of the morning to Omakau to enjoy lunch at the Omakau Commercial Hotel. Following lunch, cycle the remainder of the trail through Chatto Creek* and onto Alexandra. In Alexandra, you can either cycle to Clyde or take the scenic river track back to Clyde (additional 8 km’s).

At leisure until you departure. Transfer to Queenstown Airport and connect with your onwards flight (flight not included).

Booking Terms & Conditions:

Currency

All pricing is in New Zealand Dollars and includes 15% GST (Goods & Services Tax).

Pricing

Pricing is subject to availability and confirmation of the stated itinerary at time of booking.  If we are unable to confirm the stated hotels and services, we will endeavour to confirm substitutes at similar rates, however additional costs may apply.

Rental Car Terms & Conditions:

Inclusions: unlimited kilometres, airport/ferry collection fee, full insurance (subject to reduced excess), front windscreen cover, personal accident insurance, guaranteed replacement vehicle in case of accident.

Exclusions: insurance excess reduction of $345.00 including GST (note, standard insurance excess is $3,450.00 including GST), bond, petrol costs, one way fee ($57.50), optional extras, (all additional expenses to be paid direct)

Payment Policy

We do require a non-refundable deposit of NZD$250.00 per person before we go ahead with securing any reservations.

In addition, some of our suppliers may require further deposits to cover their strict cancellation policies, in this case we would advise you at the time of quoting and confirming your itinerary.

The balance of your booking would be required 45 days prior to your travel date.   If you book inside 45 days, full payment would be required at time of booking.

Payment can be made by electronic wire transfer and should include the additional NZD $25.00 bank fee.   We also accept Visa and Mastercard at an additional fee of 3.1%.

Amendments

We are happy to amend your itinerary and dates, however please keep in mind that some of the original services may not be available for your new dates, which may incur additional costs for substituted services.   Amendment fees may apply with multiple changes.

Cancellation Fees

Once Confirmed               Non-refundable Deposit of NZD $250.00 per person

Inside 45 – 21 Days          A Cancellation fee of 30% of your total booking value will apply, along with any cancellation fees applied by our accommodation, sightseeing and other providers.

Inside 20 – 8 days             A Cancellation fee of 50% of your total booking value will apply, along with any cancellation fees applied by our accommodation, sightseeing and other providers.

Inside 7 Days                      Full Cancellations, 100% charge

We will however do our very best to recover and minimise these cancellation fees but recommend that you purchase Travel Insurance to cover yourself.
