Bay of Islands, New Zealand

This popular destination, known as the ‘winterless north’ is an island paradise comprising of 144 islands. Apart from being an aquatic playground, it also includes many historical towns.

Paihia, the jewel of the magnificent Bay of Islands, offers amazing beaches, islands and suitable for those that enjoy fishing, scenic cruises, island hops, dolphin swimming and kayaking. Though for a true cultural experience, paddle a waka up the tidal estuaries of the Waitangi River and visit our most historic site, Waitangi where both Maori and European joined to sign the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840.

We also recommend a visit to Haruru Falls, a spectacular and breath-taking waterfall in the shape of a horseshoe and located just a short drive away.

Visit the gorgeous waterfront village and our first capital, Russell. Take the short ferry ride from Paihia, or car ferry leaves from Opua.   Russell is home to our oldest licensed pub and oldest church, Christ church which still bears the scars from musket ball holes after the fight in 1845.  Russell is also well known as a game fishing port after Zane Grey, an American, famous for his passion of fishing, described Russell as ‘an angler’s El Dorado’ after he caught his first marlin in these waters in 1926.

Kerikeri was home to Hongi Hika, a fearsome Maori chief who terrorised many Maori tribes in the early 1800’s.   Though, he was very kind to missionaries and allowed Samuel Marsden to establish New Zealand’s second mission station, built in 1821. The mission house lies in the Kerikeri Basin, along with the Mission Stonehouse, our oldest stone building dating back to 1832. Today the area is known for its orchards, wineries and art galleries.

Further afield, enjoy a day trip to Cape Reinga to take in this spectacular sight where two oceans collide, travel along ninety mile beach that stretches from Ahipara to Scott Point and visit Mongonui’s ‘world famous’ fish and chip poised over the water.
