Auckland’s east and west coast something unique, the east offers white sand beaches, the Pohutukawa Coast, rolling countryside and local markets while the wild west coast with black sand beaches offers the untouched native rainforest of the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park and a number of boutique wineries.
The tranquil islands of the Hauraki Gulf include:
Waiheke Island – Cruise, fly or heli to the ‘island of wine’ and experience wine tastings at award winning wineries, visit an olive grove and explore the Island’s beautiful coastline and beaches by vehicle, kayak or bike.
Rangitoto Island, the regions youngest dormant volcano offers spectacular views of Auckland’s landscape and Hauraki Gulf from the summit. The Island is home to the world’s largest Pohutukawa forest and is joined to neighbouring Motutapu by a causeway build during World War II. Both Rangitoto and Motutapu were declared pest free in 2011 creating a safe haven for a wide range of native wildlife including the endangered saddleback, melodious tui and the inquisitive kaka.
Tiritiri Matangi Island, a world renowned wildlife sanctuary is home to both rare and endangered wildlife. This pest-free island offers incredible birdsong, restored native forest and the oldest working lighthouse in New Zealand. The replanted bush provides food and habitat for endangered birds including the whitehead, kokako and kiwi, as well as our largest insect – the wetapunga.
Great Barrier Island, our most isolated and unspoilt island offers golden beaches, clear water and native forests. The Island offers multi day walks where you will enjoy spectacular scenery to waterfalls, hot springs and swimming holes and for those that love the sea, there is fishing, diving and kayaking.
Motutapu Island, at over 160 million years old, the island was intensively settled by Maori, hosted Victorian picnics and was a military base during World War II. The island is now home to a wide range of native birds including the Takahe, thanks to the ecological restoration programme.
Rotoroa Island was originally a rehabilitation centre operated by the Salvation Army, it is now being restored as an arts and conservation estate. Many of the original buildings are open to view and visitors can learn more about the island’s past at the exhibition centre and museum.
